PJ Diesel Engineering maintain focus on Danish Vocational Educations

 

In cooperation with Frederiksberg Erhvervsforum, PJ Diesel Engineering welcomes 78 students from Søndermarksskolen, Frederiksberg.

 

We are hosting a 3-day event this week where students from 7th grade and their teachers visit our office and workshop in Nordhavn.

 

The purpose of the event is to increase focus on the Vocational Educations (Erhvervsuddannelserne) which is extremely important these days, as we have a national challenge recruiting skilled labour in Denmark.

 

We look forward to giving our young visitors a guided tour of our facilities where the students and their teachers can experience various aspects of our product lines. This will amongst others include a tour of our Governor & Control, Fuel Equipment and Turbocharger Department. The students will also be introduced to our 3D prototype printing machinery.

 

Further we will share our company history throughout more than 40 years and how our company has evolved into Northern Europe’s leading partner for repair and reconditioning of key components for engine and turbines applications.

New General Manager – Steen Kjærhus Larsen – Governors & Controls

 

We are proud to announce that Steen Kjaerhus Larsen will join PJ Diesel Engineering A/S on November 1st 2019 as general manager for our governors and controls department – to further expand and grow with the team.

Steen is joining us from his previous position as account manager with Pon Power (Mak and Caterpillar dealer in Scandinavia)

Steen was originally educated and trained as an operator with our old neighbor “Hilbert Marine”, who ceased operation in 1998. He then later added Marine Engineer to his CV, after studying at the Copenhagen School of Marine Engineering.  

Steen has through many years worked with and specialized in service, repairs, spare parts and sales within international shipping.

Recommendation of inspection/replacement of hot parts in axial turbocharger

Aged deterioration of hot parts is observed frequently around 10 years of use period. This deterioration will become a contributing factor of degradation of Turbocharger performance, causing increasing of engine fuel cost and exhaust temperature high.

 

Purpose:
Improvement of performance and reliability

Target model:
All axial MET turbochargers (MET-SC/SD/SE/SEII/MA/MB)

Contents of work:
Inspection and replacement of hot parts (turbine blade/gas outlet guide/nozzle ring)

Work period:
Gas outlet guide/nozzle ring: within normal maintenance (4~8 hours)
Turbine blade: to be executed during docking, etc.

As MHI-MME promotes its mission of providing safe and secure navigation with energy-saving and environmentally friendly technology at the core, the comprehensive strength of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group is supported by the “shared technology framework” that was launched in April 2016.

Under the oversight of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), the framework compromises the Engineering Headquarters, Marketing & Innovation Headquarters, Value Chain Headquarters, ICT Solution Headquarters and the Research and Innovation Center. The shared technology framework seeks optimization throughout the MHI Group, such as by strengthening the technological foundation and marketing capabilities as well as the value chain, etc., including procurement.

The ICT Solution Headquarters and Research & Innovation Center play the role of providing direct support in product development related to performance and reliability. In recent years, validation of the performance and reliability of devices through numerical simulation has become extremely important in order to increase the speed of development and make performance and reliability even more certain before making a prototype. By combining large-scale simulations – made possible through great strides made in analytical hardware and software – with accumulated expertise, it is now possible to evaluate a vide range of event that mutually affect each other, such as flow, combustion, heat transfer, vibration, structural strength and lubrication, for the overall product. Furthermore, in case of Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS), which are composed of a number of devices, reliability during actual operation, including transient states, is secured by utilizing dynamic simulation.

The MHI shared technology framework will continue to develop state-of-the-art technologies that deserve the trust of our customers, so that we may ensure ceaseless performance improvement of the products of MHI-MME and other MHI Group companies as well as assure their reliability.

Last week PJ Diesel Engineering A/S had the pleasure of hosting a 3-day work experience for two students from Kratbjerg skolen dept. Engbjerg. The interns, Amalie and Daniel, are students from 7. grade, and the purpose for the students have been to learn about professions where they in advance had very little knowledge.

 

During the three days, the students, Amalie and Daniel learned about the daily workflow in our workshop and in our warehouse, at our headoffice in Nordhavn, Copenhagen.

The students learned about the workflow in the company from receipt of order to dispatch of the goods. They have also been on a guided tour in our workshop where they have experienced different aspects of our company. This included, amongst others, our Woodward and Pump department, Stock department, Turbo department and our Machine department where 3-D printing was being used to make prototypes before CNC production. The students took the chance to test our 3D printer and with great success they printed their own “toys”. Nametags have been formed and inscribed, a ship’s bell and brass bolts have been polished and threads have been recut.

It has been a great pleasure to get to know Daniel and Amalie and to teach them about the Maritime industry – maybe one of them will turn out to be one of the future Maritime Craftsmen.

The Maritime Craftsman of the Future (FMH) aims to create greater interest in technical vocational training that is being used in the maritime industry, in the Capital Region’s maritime companies. During a questionnaire survey of personnel engaged in overhaul of MET Turbochargers, we found that while they had a correct understanding of vacuum breakers, they sometimes forgot their cleaning and inspection.

PJ Diesel hosted an open house event for TEC and NEXT students

Last week PJ Diesel welcomed “The Future Maritime Craftsman” to an open house visit in our head office in Nordhavn, Copenhagen. Here, 33 students and teachers from TEC and NEXT, and representatives from Danish Maritime and MDC, had a guided tour of our workshop where they experienced all aspects of our company. This included amongst others our Woodward and Pump department, Turbo department – where they received a deeper insight into how we are reconditioning worn Turbos – and our machine department where 3-D printing was being used to make prototypes before CNC production.

The waste oil is filtered, heated and stored in tanks in which the oil and water separate due to their different densities. The oil rises helped by the heating. The water fraction is led to water processing and cleansed of oils and heavy metals before discharged to domestic sewer System for further treatment at Horsens Central Purification facility. The oil phase is pumped to a tank for further sedimentation of water. After filtration and analyses, the oil is ready for sale as support fuel oil in heavy industry or for refining in the Netherlands, where the oil is distilled into cleaner fuel oil. The highest degree of utilization of the oil product is to benefit from the heating calories. What was originally primarily heating oil, is recycled as heating oil.

The introduction of the global cap in 2020 puts limits to SOx emissions. Shipowners and operators need to prepare in a timely manner, in order to adhere to regulation, and to make sure the transition is done in a safe manner not affecting the vessels systems and operation.

With this workshop we invite technicians, superintendents, commercial operators, suppliers – and everybody else with interest in vessel maintenance and operation to learn and discuss how to prepare for the global cap.

Initially we will get an overview: why the global cap? What regulations are implemented? And how are they implemented and enforced?

PJ Diesel supports local gymnast team at Lolland in Denmark

 

Lollands Juniorfælleshold is a show team, consisting of jumping and rhythm gymnasts in the age of 10-20. The team is a combination of gymnasts from local associations and was founded in 1998.

The purpose of Lollands Juniorfælleshold is to create a community across the associations on South Lolland. The collaboration consists of six associations and this spring Lollands Juniorfælleshold performed a great show for the community.

In the summer 2019 the team have planned a one week trip to Italy, not only to perform their great shows, but also to draw experience and obtain new input from other teams.

The gymnasts train separately, rhythm in Errindlev and jump in the Højreby Hall, however, they meet once a month for common training as exercises are practiced on rhythms and jumps.

This year, the Lollands Juniorfælleshold has 20 years anniversary. This is celebrated with a joint bus trip to Næstved, where the team will watch the DGI World Team show.

PJ Diesel Engineering have supported the gymnast team, consisting of 50 happy jumping and dancing gymnasts, by sponsoring jackets and jumpsuits for training lessons and shows.

Latest news from Mitsubishi 

The new MET MBII Series launched this year provides turbochargers, that are one or two times more compact, compared to previous models with the same engine output. This is due to larger impeller capacity.

In order to maintain high efficiency while achieving a large capacity, a new compressor impeller with an optimized blade count and blade angel distribution has been developed for the MET-MBII Series. Furthermore, the series also adopts a new turbine with optimized turbine blade throat distribution.

On the other hand, casing components except for the silencer have not been changed from the previous MET MB Series, which enables the product to inherit the high reliability and maintainability of that series.

The MET-ER Series has been developed based on high pressure ratio requirements for turbochargers, in order to improve the performance of and reduce the NOx emissions of four stroke engines. This turbocharger further increases the pressure ratio of the previous MET-SRC Series and can support a maximum compressor pressure ratio of 6.0.

The series features seven types, and a single Turbocharger can handle engine outputs from approximately 500 kW to 5,800 kW.

Furthermore, the series features improved responsiveness and reduces the number of parts to achieve a more compact design and increase maintainability. MET-ER turbochargers will be released to the market after conducting tests with engine manufactures this year.

 

The new MET-ER Series radial turbochargers and new MET-MBII Series axial flow turbochargers are scheduled to be announced at the CIMAC 2019 to be held in Vancouver, Canada on June 10 to 14.

 

Turbochargers delivered for the First X-DF Engine (12X92DF)

In December 2018, we delivered three MET83MB units for the first WinGD12X92DF, which is the largest dual fuel engine in the world. These MET Turbochargers are scheduled to be installed in the 12X92DF engines designed by WinGD, manufactured by CSSC-MES Diesel Co., Ltd. (CMD), and installed in nine mega-container series ships.

The IMO has strengthened regulations regarding the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx) from vessels in order to prevent atmospheric pollution that negatively impacts human health and the environment.

The X-DF Low-pressure, duel fuel engine is one of the famous leading choice for an environmentally-sustainable low-speed main engine in vessels today.

MET turbochargers were first adopted in the WinGF X-DF engine in 2017, then adopted in X52DF, X62DF, X72DF and X92DF engines, and up until now we have received total orders of 53 MET turbocharger units for 35 WinGD X-DF engines.

We will continue to actively provide turbochargers for dual fuel engines in the future.

New Varistroke-GI model actuators

 

The VariStroke-GI is a family of linear electrohydraulic actuators that are designed to provide the linear actuation force to operate steam turbine control valves, valve racks, and Trip & Throttle Valves (T&TV). This single-acting actuator family is intended for use on mechanical drive or generator-drive steam turbines, and uses a low-pressure hydraulic oil source (typically turbine lube oil) to provide its output shaft force.

 

As a product family, users can customize their order to ensure their ordered actuator has the correct bore, length, configuration, shaft threads, and return spring force to meet their specific application.

Single-acting actuators utilize an internal or external return spring to force the output shaft and connected valve to a safe closed position upon a shutdown event and have several advantages over double-acting actuators including fail-safe action as well as not requiring the use of expensive accumulators.

Optionally users can order VariStroke-GI actuators with or without an integrated fastacting dump valve. This dump valve is designed to quickly drain oil. Depending on the application these dump valves can be driven directly from the VariStroke-GI servo or from the turbine shutdown system.

Vi skal reparere frem for at smide ud, lyder det fra PJ Diesel Engineering, som med innovative teknikker forsøger at finde en vej til reparation af kostbare turbinehjul og turboladere.

 

PJ Diesel Engineering med base i Nordhavnen i København er specialister i renovering af brugte eller beskadigede motorkomponenter. Og nu er virksomheden med i et nyt projekt, der skal få den maritime industri til at tænke mere cirkulært.

Helt konkret handler det om at finde den rette teknologi til reparation af beskadigede turbinehjul og turboladere, som er en af de kostbare og helt centrale maskindele for skibstrafikken.

Det fortalte PJ Diesels marketingchef, Rasmus Elsborg-Jensen, på IDA’s konference om Industri 4.0 og Fremtidens Intelligente Industri.

– Vi skal ikke producere, vi skal reparere, og vi vil gøre op med “brug og smid væk”-tankegangen. Det skal være slut med at lade tingene ende på den store blå hylde, sagde Rasmus Elsborg-Jensen med henvisning til, at havets bund i mange tilfælde opfattes som en skraldespand.

Kostbare komponenter 
Selve projektet er støttet af Den Maritime Fond og af Green Ship of the Future, og det går ud på at finde frem til den teknik, der kan reparere de ofte yderst kostbare turbinehjul frem for at skrotte dem og producere nyt.

– Turbinehjul bliver normalt bare smidt ud, og selv i mindre størrelse kan de koste 250.000 kr. Det er ofte bladene på hjulet, der bliver beskadiget, og vores mål i projektet er at reparere på en måde, så hjulet bliver så godt som nyt, fortalte Rasmus Elsborg-Jensen fra scenen i IDA-huset.

De valgte teknikker er indtil videre laser cladding og cold spray. Ved laser-cladding laves en kontrolleret smeltepøl, hvor der tilsættes metal, og ved cold spray repareres med metalstøv, der blæses på emnet i høj hastighed.

– Udfordringen er at få materialerne til at smelte sammen, og vi har i projektet ikke låst os fast på en teknologi endnu, fortalte Rasmus Elsborg-Jensen, som ikke lagde skjul på, at projektet langt fra er i mål endnu.

For den endelige teknik er endnu ikke fundet, og selvom PJ Diesel er tæt på kvaliteten af et nyt emne, så er den maritime industri en konservativ industri, hvor ingenting kommer ud at sejle, før det er både godkendt og testet.

– Vi har ikke sendt den reparerede turbolader ud på et skib endnu, men målet er, at den i nærmeste fremtid kommer ud at sejle, sagde marketingschefen.

Producenten er med 
Som en del af projektet med reparation af turboladere og turbinehjul har PJ Diesel haft en gruppe aktører omkring sig. Det gælder blandt andet Maersk og Force Technology, og så gælder det producenten af turboladere.

– Det lykkedes os at få producenten med, fordi producenten vurderer, at de selv i fremtiden kan bruge teknologien som supplement til deres produktion, forklarede Rasmus Elsborg-Jensen.

Han ser en fremtid, hvor der tages endnu dybere udviklingsskridt end dem, som PJ Diesel Engineering og partnere er i gang med.

– Jeg forestiller mig, at der skabes en form for autonome reparationsceller, hvor man i princippet blot placerer sit beskadigede emne, og så ved hjælp af ny teknik og machine-learning kan bygge den enkelte enhed op, sagde han i IDA-huset under konferencen Industri 4.0 – Fremtidens Intelligente Industri.

Upgrade release – Woodward MicroNet TMR Upgrade

Woodward has released a key upgrade for 5200-based MicroNet TMR.
This upgrade enables the CPU CANOpen ports for use with LinkNet HT distributed I/O, SPC CANOpen Servo Controller and multiple Woodward CAN-protocol valves and actuators.
There are six independent CAN ports available (2 per kernel). Redundancy can be achieved where necessary by wiring the can networks across 2 CPUs. This release certifies the TMR to Achilles L1 Cybersecurity and includes several new Coder-related features.

PJ Diesel have fully incorporated and adopted the IMPA ACT supplier Code of Conduct.

We have established internal systems to prevent, identify, mitigate and remediate the adverse impact of our operations on human rights, labour standards, the environment and anti-corruption principles and have been successfully audited and are now recommended by IMPA as a top supplier in the marine industry.

Following a successful partnership with IMPA ACT member Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/SPJ Diesel Engineering has finalised the element of compliance with the IMPA ACT Supplier Code of Conduct. The company has now set up policies and procedures for dealing with its operations’ adverse impacts on human rights, environment and anti-corruption principles.

Ole Lykke, Head of Strategic Purchasing at Norden, said to PJ Diesel: “We know that establishing relevant processes requires both time and resources, especially in the initial phases, therefore we appreciate that your company has prioritized this engagement.”

In response to being included in IMPA ACT’s database for preferred suppliers, CEO Anne-Mette Elsborg of PJ Diesel Engineering, stated: “Being part of the IMPA ACT database validates toward our current and even potential clients, that PJ Diesel is willing to cooperate and already has prioritised areas such as human rights including labor rights, protection of the environment and anti-corruption principles. School project on ocean plastics aims for UN Global Compact

What started as an idea to include ocean plastics in the packaging of maritime components now lives on as a start-up company.

PJ Diesel Engineering have partnered up with KEA – Copenhagen School of Design and Technology with a vision to include “ocean plastics” for packaging of maritime components. The vision quickly evolved into a project with over 20 production technology students all with one goal – use ocean plastics as an ingredient in designing the maritime transport box of the future.

” Our company was founded 40 years ago with a mission to minimize waste by re-use and reconditioning of maritime components – so removing plastic waste from oceans and use it for our transport boxes is true to our core” says Anne-Mette Elsborg (CEO and founder)

The project since evolved as a group of students later ended up with founding their own start-up with the focus of removing plastic waste from the oceans. Read more about the company here
